Nataraja Statue Banned from Malaysian Bharatanatyam Dance Performance

IPOH, MALAYSIA, June 8, 2008: At the beginning of every Bharatanatyam performance, artistes of this famous South Indian classical dance pay obeisance on stage to a statue of Lord Nataraja. However, on Monday night, a group of Bharatanatyam dancers performed before a full gallery at the Taman Budaya public auditorium without the customary on-stage prayer to Lord Nataraja.

This was because the owner of the venue, the state Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Department, permitted the dance on condition they did not install a statue or portrait of the deity and offer their prayers on stage. This is not the first time that dancers from the three Bharatanatyam schools of Nrityakalanjali, Natyakalamandir and Anandanarthana Choodamani in the state had performed at the venue. The department said the organizers were informed beforehand of the conditions and chose to go ahead with the performance.

The department's public relations officer, Shaliza Azlin, said the organizers had agreed that the prayers would be performed backstage to respect the sensitivities of the audience, who also comprised Chinese and Malays. "We did not stop them from doing the puja. We did not want them to do it in public."
Shaliza said the same conditions had been imposed on other cultural groups.

Perak state assembly speaker V. Sivakumar, who was at the performance, said: "The prayer is very much part of the cultural performance and should have been allowed on the stage." He said he would bring the matter up with the state government as well as his party so that such "intolerant behavior" could be nipped in the bud before it became widespread.

Coming to your blog for the first time.
If you are in India respect Indians sentiments, if you are in a foreign country we Indians also should respect their sentiments. The problem here is the idol worship which the Muslims do not believe. If they are not believing our principles or idol worship, we should respect it.

You might remember that Kushbu and Meera jasmine were denied entry in Hindu temples because of their religion. Were we hindus accommodative to them? no, right?

So its not good to blame only one religion. Its better to blame the unaccommodative nature of all religions. That would change all sides and make everyone more open mind.

Thanks for your comments, Anon.

// The problem here is the idol worship which the Muslims do not believe. If they are not believing our principles or idol worship, we should respect it. //

In the blog post, that is what I have questioned. That very concept of "worship", "belief" and "sentiments" of Muslims. if they really have aversion and hatred towards the form of Shiva just because they think its "idol worship" how can you expect them to even comprehend an art form lke Bharata Natyam? It is a waste and sacrileige to present the sacred art to such fellows.

// You might remember that Kushbu and Meera jasmine were denied entry in Hindu temples because of their religion.//

What I talked about was Art.

This is a slightly different matter. These are pure religious places and the deciding authorities were the local temples. Many reformist Hindu organizations (eg. RSS, Hindu Aikya Vedi) themselves are protesting the temple boards and asking them to allow entry of these real Bhaktas.

There were many other temples (Thiruvannamalai, Thirupathi etc.) that welcomed these very same artistes into their temples.

// Its better to blame the unaccommodative nature of all religions. //

Yeah, that would really make me a "secularist" which I dont want to become :))

the dance is Hindu. So, the song, the meaning and the dance are for hindu philosophy and art.

banning it is a violence against a religion.

it is similar to banning a cinema for showing a church or masjid to the audience of the film.

the problem with us is that we have lost the ability of rationality. if only we had, we would have known the difference between purifying a temple visited by people of other religion to destroying a religion in a cruel way.

to make it clear, let me put it this way. I am a christian, and the bible and my religion believe that people who do not believe in jesus and follow my church are pagans, and agents of Satan; all the pagan worships should be ridiculed , their place of worhsip should be destroyed, and the pagans should be murdered.

being a christian, i think that jesus is the only son of god, and bible is the only book that tells the truth, directions by my church are my principles; and I should follow whatever bible says.

now, I am visiting a temple.

is it same like that a government banning a church or masjid being shown in a cinema?

Ex-Softcore Malaysia joining the elite league of OIC hard-core fanatics in some sense is good for the civilized world. Complete polarization will surely be required in the day of reckoning when the entire civilized world gets rid of these rogues.
