JAMMU: Five labourers were killed and four injured, when two terrorists attacked a shelter at Rajouri's Mathiani village late Thursday night. Police said two men dressed in military fatigues entered the village shelter at about 10.30 pm and demanded identity proof from the labourers. The labourers were then asked to segregate themselves based on their religion. After rounding up 11 Hindu labourers, the attackers opened fire, killing five of them on the spot. Two labourers, who managed to escape, reported the incident to an Army camp in the area at about 7 am on Friday. A rescue team airlifted four injured workers from the village. They have been admitted to Jammu's Military Hospital. Three columns of the Army were rushed to the area. "Police has launched a hunt for the killers," said Jammu IG S P Vaid. "This is an act of terrorism. We will trace the group behind it." In May 2006, terrorists had unleashed two communal terror attacks at Doda and Udhampur.

NEW DELHI: The killing of four Indian fishermen, who had strayed into Sri Lankan waters on Thursday, could be the handiwork of LTTE in order to create a rift between the Indian and Sri Lankan governments. Holding that this possibility could not be ruled out, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta on Friday said an inquiry into the incident was being conducted to ascertain the facts. Asked about the incident on the sidelines of a ceremony where Army chief General J J Singh took over as the new chairman of the chiefs of staff committee, Admiral Mehta said, "Fishermen cross over into each other's waters in search of lucrative catches...But the Sri Lankan Navy chief has assured me that he has asked his forces not to fire at Indian boats." Outgoing IAF chief Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi, in turn, said the LTTE air strike on a Sri Lankan airbase near Colombo on Monday had added a completely new "dimension" to the internal war taking place in the island nation. "The existence of aircraft (with LTTE) did not come as a surprise...we have been monitoring it. But the attack was a surprise. This is a new dimension and, therefore, it is serious," he said. This confirms an earlier TOI report which held that the Indian security establishment was worried that even a light aircraft in the hands of a terrorist outfit could be used as a missile against high-value targets, demonstrated well by the 9/11 strikes by al-Qaida in US in 2001. India has strengthened patrolling and surveillance along its coastline, especially in the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar region. This becomes all the more important since the radar coverage in central and peninsular India is quite weak, as reported earlier by TOI.
