bharatanatyam

"Hey, Selvi, are you still not ready ?"

The voice came from somewhere. The room was littered with clothes, make-up articles and suitcases. I looked at myself once more in the mirror...

alapadmaI remembered that day well. It was the time of the morning when birdsong was rife.. I had just finished my bath and had come to the entrance of the hostel. The area was suffused with the balmy sunlight of March. Pollen-shedding yellow hibiscus flowers had spread their petals like the open fingers of a henna-laden hand demonstrating the alapadma mudra. Yellow amaltas flowers fallen from the tree speckled the earth in a row like the spots of zari on a silk sari. Red oleanders were scattering light in half-bloom like the rising tide of pink on the face of a bashful maiden.

My mind was also blooming in that early morning. Like the gentle waves that lapped silently around one's feet at the beach at Besant Nagar without din or noise I was lost in comforting waves of thought. Even as I had got my college degree I had decided that my higher education will be in dance. That too in Kalakendra. There where art was inseparable from life, I longed to sit and learn at the feet of illustrious savants taking them to be my guru. I had resolved in my mind that this was my desire and goal in life. In this objective God had not forsaken me, neither had my parents. I enrolled here exactly as I had wished. The days had passed in dance and all its forms - jatiswaram, javali, konnakol and kuravanji. It is now one year since I arrived here. My life in art had commenced.

dancing-shiva

In the night of Brahma, Nature is inert
And cannot dance till Shiva wills it
He rises from His rapture
And dancing sends through inert matter pulsing waves of awakening sound,
And lo! matter also dances
Appearing as a glory round about Him.
Dancing, He sustains its manifold phenomena
This is poetry; but none the less, science...

That was Dr Ananda Coomaraswamy in the Dance of Shiva. That week the class was only pre-occupied with this. Moreover Subramanian Sir had explained it beautifully:

"...only when we realize that this dance takes place inside each one of us, in our hearts would we arrive at the real significance of Shiva's tandavam. That is the moment when Art unfolds. That is the moment when the artiste transcends all. At that moment he is answerable to no person, no construct or no regulations. The artiste, in his heart, need remain true only to his Art and to no external power...."

Those words, even now early in the morning, were reverberating in my mind.

Walking over the moss-covered path I had arrived at the front mandapam of the hostel. And there I stood transfixed. The flowers in my hand dropped unwittingly. The Ganapathi had disappeared !

Had someone removed and taken the Ganapathi ? Who would come inside our premises and steal the Ganapathi ?

ganapathyThe Ganapathi used to sit in regal fashion inside the mandapam. I have heard it said that He had been positioned there ever since the inception of the art school. In the morning we, the female students, would pluck flowers and adorn Him. One of us would sing. Others would commence the abhinaya in dance rendering a Ganapathi kavutham. It was He who started our day. Now He himself was missing. What had happened ?

I walked and ran to the room of our guru Ragini Amma. A number of female students had already gathered there. They were complaining about something to Amma. They appeared to be flustered.

"Amma, the Ganapathi under the banyan tree is no longer there. Somebody has taken it away ".

"I got up in the morning and went for a walk. The large statue of Natraja at the Reception Block has disappeared".

"What about the Saraswati at the auditorium entrance ?"

"That is also gone"

"And the Ganapathi in the front mandapam of the hostel ?"

"He is also not to be seen"

Everybody was in confusion. Suddenly and inexplicably have all the deities in our premises chosen to disappear ? Is this a sign of ill omen for the institution ?

"Come let us go and meet Madam Director".

We followed Ragini Amma towards the Fine Arts block. The classrooms, the office and the room of Madam Director were all located there. All the faces bore a question mark.

berundaOur Madam Director was Neela Johnson. an internationally renowned art personality. From a young age she had trained in Bharata Natyam at Kalakendra. She was fortunate enough to become the student of the founder of this Temple of Dance, the late Satyabhama Devi who still resides in all our hearts. Madam Director had later swirled and twirled across cities like Delhi and Mumbai to continents like America and Europe in the fashion of Brahmari dance. It was just last year that she returned to her "maternal home" as Director of Kalakendra. A magazine described her as an artistic genius who acted as the bridge between tradition and modernity. The same art magazine some months later described her as someone who did not know the difference between transcending tradition and transgressing tradition. It seemed to me that the artistic vision of Neela Johnson was perhaps best represented by the mudra formed with hooked and twisted fingers signifying the single-bodied but two-headed Berunda bird facing opposite directions.

Subramaniam Sir was in the room of Madam Director. All the teachers were in discussion. Only Ragini Amma went inside. We returned to the hostel.

That afternoon there was an announcement on the notice board. The images in the college campus had been removed at the instructions of the Director. The students were requested to maintain peace.

bharatanatyam-vineeth-nairIt was said that Madam considered idolatory as equivalent to superstition. As such on no account would idolatory be permitted in Kalakendra. Students would not have permission to take part in any dance recitals that are part of a temple function or a religious festival. Madam had created these new regulations. She was determined on their implementation. Even when many teachers pointed out that Satybhama Devi, who had those deities installed, had anointed them lovingly there was no relenting on the part of Madam. Subramanaian Sir started explaining how roopam or form was the very basis of Bharata Natyam and how the concept of angikam or whole-body expression was central to this dance. Madam simply cut him short without letting the dialogue continue. As a result of the entreaties of the senior teachers only the the Ganapathi under the banyan tree was permitted to be reinstalled.

All these matters I could learn only from an indisposed Ragini Amma. I simply could not understand why Madam Director was doing all this.

It appears Padma Amma had interjected : "Bharata Natyam, Odissi and Mohini Attam were all nourished and sustained in the temples. The proof has been in the front of our eyes".

"Ms Padma, I am writing an alternative narrative; I intend to free Bharata Natyam from the clutches of religion. You will soon understand this", said Madam casting a deep glance at all around her; they were all stunned into silence. All this was told to me by Padma Amma herself.

***

After this the mood in Kalakendra changed completely. There was an atmosphere of misgiving all around. When speaking to Madam Director there was palpable tension all around.. Without a glimpse of Ganapathi my mornings turned empty. I had the feeling of having lost a dear friend.

Subramaniam Sir was trying to infuse the customary enthusiasm in his class.

"Sir, you say that the art of Bharata Natyam is rooted in sacredness. You have talked about its inherent philosophy and its spiritual core but....". Selva was my batchmate. He used to ask a lot of questions in class. That day too he started a discussion. "Has this art not come from the devadasis more or less ? Who are they ? Are they not religiously anointed prostitutes ? It would appear that this art is the vestige of a decadent social practice. This art was created for the entertainment of the landed rich, an art for sexual revelry. You are trying to infuse sacred connotation into it. We, the students, have debated this already amongst ourselves".

"No it is not that way, Selva. As a student of Bharata Natyam how did such a notion enter your mind ?"
Sir cleared his throat. " Even at the end of the 19th century in cities like Tanjavur, Madurai, Srirangam and Kanchipuram devadasis lived with high social standing. They lived with respect and with influence. But at that time, on account of widespead social and economic disruption they were left without either wealthy patrons or art rasikas to support them or nurture the art. It was in those circumstances that a few amongst them were forced to resort to prostitution. We need to understand this in perspective".

"But no British chronicler has written such an account, sir. 'Ritual prostitution' is what they have termed it".

"Yes. That is natural. There is a reason why they had such an idea. Even before the British arrived here the Christian missionaries had come here, is it not ? Their objective and intention was conversion. They had already made up their mind that the people here, their art and their religion were of a low order, uncivilised and without culture...".

There was a change of facial expression amongst some of the students in the class. It appeared that they did not appreciate this input.

"....hence they rated Bharata Natyam also by the same yardstick. At the temple, during a festival procession it was the devadasis who danced at its head. Just like processional music, songs and nadaswaram an integral part of the event used to be Bharata Natyam".

"Sir, I think the name Bharata Natyam came up later. At that time it was called Sadir. There was no sacredness associated with it. That is why the devadasi institution was banned": Selva would not relent.

bharatanatyam_mudra_by_madzindia"No. We read in Bharata Muni's Natya Shastra a form known as Chaturam and it is this that had been called Sadir in Tamil. It is one among twenty-five dance forms of Shiva. But Christian missionaries were not aware of any of these nuances. They saw only the machinations of Satan. This is 'evil' and this practice must be obliterated was their outlook. It was on this basis that Western chroniclers in their publications have written coarsely and negatively about our dance and about devadasis. When the British tried to enact a law it was the devadasis who objected to it and put forth a petition. Their handwritten petition is available even now as a document, did you know ?"

Sir walked up to a corner of the classroom where a cupboard was located and returned with a voluminous book.

"Look...in this petition, devadasis have stated with pride how high a regard there is in society for their art. They have quoted the shlokas from the Sivakamam - "At the end of my puja shall be performed the shuddha nirutham ; with members of the Kanikaiyar progeny in dance, five instruments shall be played by masters competent in each" - this has been decreed by no less than Shiva himself.

Sir turned the pages and read on:

"They pleaded that such a sacred art should not be destroyed. Please provide us with education and give us the facilities to teach this art. As in earlier days we shall transmit to the people notions of jnana and bhakti through the medium of dance. That of itself will be our redemption, they implored. But at that time nobody understood their demands. People in society from the higher and educated classes, although probably aware of the greatness of this art, did not consider it appropriate for the female members of the family to take up dancing and singing. They remained rasikas and patrons of the art. Even Indian social reformers considered that there was no place for devadasis in the modern context. They did not appear to be bothered by the fact that this would lead to the complete eclipse of a great art form. As a result the devadasi tradition was brought to an end by legislation..."

His glance became fixed on the black-and-white photograph hanging in the classroom.

"....and at that time she was the only one who came forward. Satyabhama Devi...emerged to save this art. Under the tutelage of such outstanding devadasis such as Mayavaram Gowri Amma and Thiruvarur Kamala Amma she learnt the fine points of this sacred art form. She rescued Bharata Natyam. She established the elite art centre of Kalakendra..."

Sir closed the book. There were tears in his eyes. He appeared to be overcome with emotion.

"In this fashion this art form has suffered, expired and been resucitated. What else is there to say ? All of us who are now engaged in this art have done many punyams in our last life. Do you know what Abhinava Gupta says ?

"A modicum of delicate dance, of Lasyam, is enough. Devi is ever and always satisfied"

"With a little tandavam, Shiva with his ganas or attendants stands fulfilled"

A little dance is all that is required to make Him happy. How simple - just a little dance !

Sir had again peaked in his emotion.

***

"Dear students, meet George Master. Biju Eranius George. Father Francis Margosa's student. He has had formal training in Bharata Natyam, Odissi and Kuchipudi. He is involved in the Kalaippannai institution in Trichy. He takes classes for art students at the international level at many art schools. He is my friend of long standing".

After the introduction by Madam Director, with a smile playing all over her face, George Master stood up and greeted us with a bow. He looked slim and energetic in a yellow kurta. Generally the faces of male dancers in the Indian tradition combined masculine robustness with feminine charm. This was a distinct attraction. But George Master's moustache-less face was a study in vapidity.

"Then this here is Mrs David. Mrs Rajakumari David running a well-known dance school in New York.
She learnt Bharata Natyam under Senior Guru Shanmughasundaram Pillai. After he passed away she is the inheritor, so to speak, of his style of dance".

Mrs David smiled in a friendly fashion. She was probably around the same age as the elder ladies in our institution. However with her orange churidar and her coquettish talk one was tempted to call her Akka. Her hair, cut short and combed down, pressed dutifully against her shoulder like an obedient friend. Generous make-up was apparent in her made-up eyebrows, cheek and lips.

Madam Director continued, "Quite a lot remains to be said about these two people. But they are, after all, going to be with you people for a few more weeks. So you will yourself learn this".

We were going to perform and demonstrate in a few weeks a novel work of art that was the handwork of these two persons. This grand performance organised by Kalakendra was going to be a novel work of choreography based on a hitherto unknown tradition. Not all students could gain this opportunity. I and Malathi got this opportunity. Our happiness knew no bounds.

***

The evening rays were shining through the tree branches. Intermittent birdsong usual for that time of the evening could be heard in the backdrop of the sound of the dancers' anklet bells. Female students with the rustle of their dupattas drawn up tautly were walking by. The wind was endearingly playing about with their hair locks.

Pathos-filled violin strains floated up in the air. Even as the rehearsal got underway we became aware that this was a "theme" about which we had never heard before. The lyrics and songs seemed strange.

berunda-mudra

"Please demonstrate a devahastham dear".

On the request of Mrs David, Malathi stood in lissome fashion and gracefully showed the abhaya hastha mudra.

No, this was not OK.

Mrs David was not satisfied. She did not like the kati hastham or the varada hastham either.

"George, do you observe that there are shortcomings in all these hastha mudras ? Where is the emotion and the feeling we ask for ?"

George Master nodded his head. "Our precursors in art have already applied their mind to this. Particularly my guru Father Margosa. Look here...".

George Master pulled out a heavy tome from his bag and started turning the pages. It was a book on Bharata Natyam. But it carried pictures of new mudras that we had never seen.

Master pointed out a picture showing the small finger of each hand held horizontally and vertically against each other.

This was the Holy Cross mudra.

"Wonderful", exclaimed Mrs David. We looked back at our teachers. The faces were deadpan.

In the ensuing days we learnt brand new mudras such as the Son of God mudra, the Holy Spirit mudra and so on. Father Margosa's book was a treasure trove. It should be included in the curriculum in the next year was the recommendation given by Mrs David to Madame Director when the latter came for a rehearsal one day.

"I could not tolerate seeing all this. It was as though some rakshas was torturing the devatas and apsaras of abhinaya. Looking at them it appeared as though the devatas of svara were breaking out into sobbing. What was the necessity of all this ?" - I accidentally overheard Ragini Amma lamenting to Sir one day.

Generally speaking our teachers were on the side of positive initiative in matters relating to innovation in art. But for some reason George Master's technical points did not appear to go down well with them. We were proceeding to learn many more deva hastha mudras.

Some of the enactments were outwardly gauche. A crown of thorns is placed on the head. Blood oozes out. That was one scene, for example. The man is whipped and tortured. This was another scene. It was not appropriate to project raw emotion and feeling. Anger, disgust, eroticism and other rasas should find expression in artistically aesthetic ways and not be demeaned. This was what we had learnt and absorbed as the basic theory of Bharata Natyam. But George Master decreed that in this performance they will be displayed in their explicit form.

George Master and Mrs David spoke frequently about the "piece" that will form the high point and acme of the performance.

"That issue needs to be stated emphatically by us. For this purpose it more appropriate to have a solo performance rather than a group dance".

George Master accepted the suggestion of Mrs David. They decided to go for the beautiful svarajati "Nadanam Aadinar Eesan" . It was an amazing composition with nuanced bhavas and creative potential. Its movements were laden with power and virility..

"But...", Mrs David dragged...

"There are in it artistic expressions describing the raising of the left leg, matted hair laced with the river Ganga and so on. How can we reflect such ideas ?”

She made a wry face as though she had stepped on a slimy worm. George Master rubbed his chin and appeared to be lost in thought.

"Hmm....let us retain the same svaras but dispense with the lyrics which can be replaced and substituted by instrumental music. What do you say ?"

"Great idea !"

Mrs David nodded her head enthusiastically.

My friends came and hugged me: "Congrats ! You deserved it". Understanding dawned on me. I had been chosen for the solo performance !

But, I was instructed, there shall be none of the customary movements or abhinaya related to that swarajati that we usually performed. Father Margosa had created new abhinayas similar to the deva hasthams. With eyes held fixed the arms should be raised upwards while in standing position - the Crucifixion abhinaya ! This abhinaya was the supreme internal expression of Bharata Natyam was what Father Margosa had written in his book.

The Madonna mudra.....the Risen Christ abhinaya.....the Church mudra...

The rehearsal went on.

***

That morning it was overcast. There were still two more days for the event. As I had not been able to apply myself to my studies for some days now, let me do it today I thought. I entered the library. I picked up my favourite book which contained the complete set of articles written by Satyabhama Devi and moved towards the reading table. There I saw by chance an old copy of an art magazine that somebody had perused and left behind. It pertained to the year 1996. The cover carried a photograph of Director Madam. The cover story was about her. I started reading it with eagerness. An interview of senior artiste Sarada Amma was also carried in the issue.

"Neela Johnson was then a small girl. She had come to learn dance in Kalakendra. Her family was Christian. Hence she was not familiar with Hindu culture and tradition. Satyabhama Devi was very hesitant to enroll Neela Johnson because of her Christian background. Ultimately looking at her intentness and eagerness Satyabhama Devi consented to teach her. I also suggested that she be given an opportunity. Although Satyabhama Devi was rather strict during the selection process she would usually become one with the admitted students. Amma fully trusted her students to safeguard the sacred and inner-directed spirit of Bharata Natyam."

I read the issue through carefully.

The strains of a Bharatiyar song floated through from the neighbouring classroom. His songs had been selected for dance practice by the junior students for some other performance. Mesmerised by the music I was involuntarily shaking my head in appreciation even as I turned the pages to continue reading the articles.

"Why do I like Kumarasambhavam ? The reason was the deep symbolism embedded it it. Through her austerities what Parvati finally wins is not passion but devotion and self-sublimation. Uma, through her penance, won over Shiva and became one with Him....Shiva infused life. All shortcomings He burnt and turned into ashes. So must a dancer "burn to ashes" all that is dross and blemished. Only then will the rising internal spirit sparkle and shine."

Satyabhama Devi's words always brought calm and solace to my seething mind.

bharatnatyam-dancerI could see a rising dust storm through the windows of the library. The trees swayed and brushed against each other on account of the swift wind. The cloud-laden overcast skies were turning dark and threatening. Goodness ! It appeared that there was going to be rain in this May midsummer.

I rose and came outside. I looked up.

The first drops of rain splashed off my eyelashes, crawled down to touch my lips. dripped and splattered on my breasts, rolled down to the folds of my stomach and were gathered together in my navel.

My body came alive. The spirit bathed in the contact with numerous raindrops was suffused in coolness. The pulse and the nerves tingled.

Uma does penance standing on one leg. Months, years and seasons pass by. The first drops of rain fall on her teasingly, states Kalidasa in the ineffable poetry of Kumarasambhavam.

At that moment, amidst those raindrops I became aware; I was indeed Uma.

***

"Hey, Selvi, are you still not ready ?".

A flustered Malathi entered the rehearsal room in the rear of the auditorium. She was breathless.

The adornments were all in place. Only kajal remained to be applied to the eyes. That was also done. And I was ready.

"All the invited guests have come for the performance. It was not certain if the Minister for Culture would turn up. But arrive he did. The Archbishop has also come. He is seated in the front row beside Mrs David. This event is not just going to be a success but a super-success !"

Malathi chattered on excitedly.

I had come to the edge of the stage from the dressing room. The swirling arc lights in green, blue and red dimmed gradually till the stage was bathed in soft blue. With the first mournful strains of the violin preparation was ready for the swarajati. I came and stood at the centre of the stage.

The mridangam started lightly sounding the tala...tha tham jari..thai.

The audience was slowly receding into the darkness of the dimming lights. In the front row Mrs David, Director Madam and the distinguished guests receded into small dots and then gradually disappeared. The stage disappeared. The statues next to the screen disappeared. The arc lights dimmed into extinction..

Tha ka dhimi tha...tha ri kita theem....

bharatanatyam2Shiva's damaru echoed through the universe. Primal sound was everywhere.
Shiva's matted hair flew in directions eight.
The Crescent Moon turned effulgent. The Ganga brimmed over. Laburnum flowers scattered down.
Music shook His shoulders eight. His Garland of Snakes hissed in dance.
The upright Agni in His hand shot upwards.
The Demon-Dwarf lay crushed beneath His feet.
Devas and munis stood in awe with folded hands.
Uma, as consort, stood transfixed in His dance

Varied Dances
And the dances varied,
With it the foot-work
And the jingle of the anklets
And the songs sung
And the Forms He assumed.....[*]

...and lo! the left leg is up in the air !

Tandavam, the Dance of Shiva !

...Am I the Dancer or am I the Dance ?

Church Attacks, Conversions & Holy Fathers..

Faith Under Attack? Which Faith?

Times of India's detailed everday coverage of the recent Karnataka Church Attacks & the aftermath under the heading "Faith Under Attack" is intriguing. Maybe the intention behind the repeated use of the words "attack", "danger", "assault" and all that is to denote the damages to a few Churches by a few angry Hindu youth. Maybe these youth are from Bajrang Dal or some other organization or even a section of frustrated general public.

But I think, the phrase "Faith under attack" should ideally be used to denote the concerted Christian efforts involving ALL sects and Churches of India & their global masters at converting gullible and poor Hindus by overt and covert means. That is an attack, an aggresion, a war, an invasion of much higher and alarming proportions.

It is an open secret that these Church groups which are in focus now are part and parcel of aggressive global evangelist missions like the "Joshua Project". When some of them say "oh we dont do any conversion" in the Indian media, it is an utter lie and flies off their face - The details and facts speak for themselves. ALL global Christian evangelist websites openly declare India as their No.1 focus.

For example, "Joshua Project" even has a running counter of a large list of all Hindu castes in India that shows what % of each caste has become Christian, and that is proudly denoted as "progress". Analagous to "planting of bombs", they speak of doing "Church planting" in every nook and corner of India. The Times of India iteself carried a report "The Businees of Faith" (7 Sep 2008, By Amrita Singh, TNN) on this. The Churches "planted" this way - do they have any sanctitiy, sacredness or noble purpose associated with them? The correct description for them is aggression camps or fradulent shops.

Aggressors pretending as Victims

The so called "normal" Hindus who are "pained" by attacks on Churches by Hindu "mobs" who are converting Karnataka into a battleground better become aware of all this. It is the Christian missions who are converting parts of India into "battleground" in their impatient, Adharmic quest to convert the whole world into a "harvest ground" for Christianity. Great ancient nations and cultures like Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and even many parts of China are falling for them, unfortunately. Alas, these cultures, having lost their vigour and virility are falling a prey to the Christian evalengelization.

"Normal" Hindus, ask yourself - is that what you want to happen to Bharat Bhumi also? You better learn a bit about the track record of "peace loving" Christain missions all over the world - in Africa, In South America and parts of Asia. Has that been *any* different, other than the common results of destruction of native cultures, exploiting and impoverishment of native tribes, stifling of freedom and libetry, engineering of long lasting ethnic conflicts (like in Rwanda and in our own Orissa tribal belts) and capture of political power thru religion? We in India have seen the face of Christian terror for so long in the North East. For example, frustrated by not getting converts over decades, the Baptist Church of Tripura deliberately engineered ethnic conflicts in the 1980s that resulted in large scale conversions. The deep nexus between the Christian missions and North eastern terrorsit outfits (like NLFT and the Baptist Church of Tripura) is very well documented. (Book: PG Varghese, 'India 's North-East Resurgence: Ethnicity, Insurgency and Governance, Development ' 1996).

The initial physical attacks on Churches in Karantaka were violent. They are no doubt condemnable - whoever is the guilty should be arrested and punished in accrodance with the law. But viewing them with myopic "secular" eyes as just "yet another act by the fascist saffron Brigade" is either utter stupidity and igorance or deliberate act of omission. It is very surprising to see the so called "intellectuals" who are supposed to be well-read in the world history and current affairs view these just as "goonda acts" and NOT as a relatively mildly violent Hindu reaction given the curernt scale of Christian aggression on Hindu Dharma and society.

The attacks had one good result in that they intially sparked a much needed discussion and debate on the Christian evangelist missions in Karnataka - viz. their activities, motives, their sources of funds, their impact on the society and demography and their political agenda. But in the chorous of the shrieking noises by the Christian bodies posing as "victims" and the overt Christian-appeasing acts by the Central govt. and the state opposition parties, the real issue abt Christian evangelization and conversion is now deliberately being pushed to the back seat.

Going by the facts and details of the reports about the later "attacks", particularly the burglary/intrusion in two Bangalore Churches, a strong suspicion arises whether these are stage managed shows by the Christian bodies themselves to increase the pitch of their "victimhood" stories. Given the track record of Christian groups in India and the world over, they are very adept at this. We have not forgotton the over-hyped stories about "murders" of Christian priests in Gujrat and "rapes" of nuns in MP a few years back none of which were real incidents but concocted stories deliberately propagated by the Christian missions. This has to be borne in mind.

Acts of folly by the Holy Fathers

The Karnataka state government has handled the issue really well. The Managalore police maintained extreme restraint even at the grave provocation of attacks by Christian protesters from Churches and cemetries.

The public snubbing of Karnataka Chief Minister by the Bangalore Archbishop in the full glare of the media is a highly condemnable and an utterly cheap act. What authority does the Archbishop have that he dares to humiliate the Honourable Chief Minister, that too when the CM has come as a guest to Bishop's house? Is this the "Atithi Satkar" that his Christian Values have taught him?

The Archbishop is really out of his mind, "Attacks worse than terrorism" he thunders in Times of India (24 Sep 08, Bangalore edition). Pray God, can he or anyone explain what that means? These skirmish attacks in which none died or even injured, in his view, are *worse* than terrorism that killed close to thousand Indian citizens, including our brave soldiers and policemen - What kind of Indian is this guy? Does he have any sense of belonging to this country and its people? I can understand his affections for the religion and the "Blessed sacrement", but such a statement?

Probably The Archbishop takes all his orders from Vatican and values them even more than the interests of the nation he is born into and its constitution. In that sense, he is just a lowly stooge of Pope, a tinpot dictator sitting in his Christian banana republic and exhorting his followers all over the world... And he makes faces and gets agitated in front of a well-respected and beloved person of Karnataka, a person holding the democratically elected highest office of the State govt.! His master dares to summon the Indian envoy in Vatican and questions about some small incidents happening in some states of India ! What an arrogance - so befitting to the religion of aggression that these holy men seek to propagate!

Conversion - is that all that is to your religion, Bishop?

Another perl of wisdom from Rev. Bernard Moras - "conversion is a relationship between God and human being. if it is under duress, I will not call that person a Christian" (TOI, 24 Sep 08). Its really neat, I think... he said it so clearly in his own words - The relationship between God and man - the pivot of his religion is not Bhakti or Prem (love), not Jnana (spiritual quest), not Seva (service), not Sadhana (divine practices) or any such thing - it is *conversion*.. If the idea of "conversion" is removed from the Christianity that he practices and preaches, there will be nothing left ! Conversion is both the means and end to such evangelical Christianity which is what *most* of Indian Christians are into, unfortunately, with very few exceptions of truly spiritual and worship-oriented Christian sects.

And there are theological reasons to it. Sitaram Goel, famous Scholar and a great historian observes -

"The Vedic tradition advises people to be busy with themselves, that is, their own moral and spiritual improvement. Several disciplines have been evolved for this purpose tapas (austerity), yoga (meditation), jñAna (reflection), bhakti (devotion), etc. A seeker can take to (adhikAra) whichever discipline suits his adhAra (stage of moral-spiritual preparation). There is no uniform prescription for everybody, no coercion or allurement into a belief system, and no regimentation for aggression against others.

The Biblical tradition, on the other hand, teaches people to be busy with others. One is supposed to have become a superior human being as soon as one confesses the *only true faith*. Thenceforward one stands qualified to *save* others. The only training one needs thereafter is how to man a mission or military expedition, how to convert others by all available means including force and fraud, and how to kill or ruin or blacken those who refuse to come round."

(Preface of the book VINDICATED BY TIME - The Niyogi Committee Report
On Christian Missionary Activities
, Voice of India Publications, New Delhi) .

The whole meaing of freedom to relgious conversion has to be understood in such a theological context. There is an ocean of difference between religions that just accept converts that come by naturally (Hinduism, Buddhism) and cults which have conversions as their main goal, aiming not for any liberation of individual but for dominance and power (Christianity, Islam).

The Indian Christian missions should realize that slogans like "Nagaland for Christ", "Karantaka for Christ" and the biggie one, "India for Christ" should all be rejected outright for the well being of Indian nation, with its grand and beautiful legacy of religious diversity from time immemorial. They should start respecting other religions and stop the conversion activities. Otherwise such "missionary position" that is not just dull, uninspiring and boring :)), will also continue to pose great danger to the the social harmony and freedom in India. And thats true for the world at large, too.

School shut-down by Christian bodies to protest Orissa events: highly unethical and a political blakmail

Today, On 29th August all Christian schools in India remained closed to heed to the call given by Catholics Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), apparently to "peacefully" protest the violent attacks on Christians and Churches in Orissa. Some Christian groups have gone to the extent of demanding President's rule in Orissa making shrill noise abt "safety for their lives" in "this" country.

Violence by anyone for any reason is not justifiable in a civil and democratic society like ours. But, let us put the facts straight. There is a palpable Hindu anger behind the recent happenings in Orissa. The brutal murder of 84 years old Swami Laxmanananda and 4 innocent Hindus at the night of Krishna Janmashtami at the hands of more than 25 armed thugs who barged into his Ashram literally shook the state and the nation like. After all, Swamiji was a highly respected Hindu monk, Guru, a great social worker and also a VHP leader in the Christian-missionary-ravaged tribal belt of Kandhmal district of Orissa. He had been rendering yeoman service to the tribals of the area for more than 25 years that earned him such reverance and affection, and also the wrath of the missionary-mafia which was out to establish its aggression and dominance over the region.

The intial statements from the state govt. that the murder was by Maoists was not taken by anyone, including the Maoists who denied it. Because, there were more than 8 attempts in the past to kill Swamiji, *all* by militant Christians in the area and there was a perennial threat to his life. To add credibility to the well-grounded suspiscion, police arreseted 3 suspects after the murder, all associated with Christian bodies.

Background of the Christian vs Hindu-tribal conflict in Kandhamal district

It is highly deplorable that these details are totally blacked out in the media stories that contain high pitch reporting about the burning of Churches and attacks on Christians. This creates a baseless impresion in the minds of an average citizen that all this violence was started by Hindus unprovoked.

We have to view the move by Christian bodies to shut all the schools under their control in this context.

It is highly unethical on their part to exploit their hold on Educational institutions for a clearly political and communal mobilization like this one, that aims to streotype all Hindus of Orissa as militant and aggressors. Quite a few of these institutions are "Christian", purely because of their British colonial legacy, which the post-Indepedance "secular" govts. and the citizens of this country have allowed to continue without questioning. Many of them even recieve grants and patronage by the govt at present and are bound by the laws that govern such bodies. Plus, the majority of the students and teachers of these schools are all Hindus from whom the schools recieves work, support as well as money in terms of fees and donations.

On what grounds, do the Christian bodies claim legal or moral right to "force" such a shutdown on their staff and students? Even if they organize a purely political protest march such as this in the school premises and make it "optional" for students to participate, that is highly questionable. But they have gone several steps overboard, confident that gullible Hindus who work and study in the schools will never raise their voice against this and nor will the govt or media question this blatant transgression. This is using one sort of "power" to force their version of opinion on the society, eventhough it is rooted in falsehood and shady grounds, to gain another sort of "power". It is nothing short of a political blackmail of the worst kind.. and its a cruel joke for such groups to call themselves as 'service' missions.

It is a dangerous state of affairs that a religious group can *stage* such an act in this country, without having to answer anyone. It is a shame on media, that it just reports this as yet another news, without pointing out the ugly agenda.

Another thing to note. We have come a very long way from the days of the British and Chrisitian missions are not at all the whole and sole providers of education in this country. The govt. and other private institutions far outnumber the Christian ones today. In fact, the biggest Education NGO in the country today is NOT any Christian group, but Vidya Bharathi, a Hindu organisation. If you count all Hindu Educational intitutions in the country (that includes the ones by Sangh Parivar affliated ors, various Maths and Ashrams, Temple bodies, spiritual leaders, local NGOs and various other trusts), that would far outnumber the Christian ones. Currently all these Hindu schools are totally apolitical - they impart neutral, secular education, with probably a small dosage of basic Hindu cultural values.

Hindus better learn such political tactics from the precedent set by Christians in this regard and show their real "power", whenever and wherever Hindus are attacked and Hindu human rights are compromised. If the state of affairs continue this way, it will not be long before we are forced into such a situation.

The irresponsible Indian Home Minister: Sack him

See this: Patil links Afzal to Sarabjit; BJP says 'nonsense'.

It appears that minister Shivraj Patil does not have a clue of even the most basic details of both the cases.

AFZAL is an *Indian* citizen, sentenced to death by the *Indian* "Supreme court" after extensive investigations and proceedings and appeals, for the crime of waging war against India by attacking the Indian parliment and killing Indian policemen on duty. He has been treated in a dignified manner in the Indian prisons for 4 years. He himself accepts the crime and asks for "sympathy" as part of his clemency petition... And remember, India is a secular, democratic country, known for its reasonably impartial Justice system.

SARABJIT is an *Indian* citizen, about to be hanged by the *Pakistani* government based on frivolous charges, after trial by just lower courts with no options for any appeal at any level, most probably in a case of mistaken identity, for one "Man singh" who was allegedly involved in some bomb blasts in Pak. He has been tortured in the Paki jails for more than 18 years... And Remember Pakistan is a rouge Islamist Jihadist state ruled by a dictatorship, with horrible record of Judiciary and of treating its own non-Mulsim minorities, particularly Hindus.

Where is the comparison, Mr. Home Minister?
Do you also mean to say that, in case if Pak. govt. gives clemency to Sarbajit, should India *free* all the Jihadi terrorists it has captured?

With a home minister like this, is there any surprise that Islamist bombs are exploding all over India and killing patriotic, innocent Indian citizens?

BJP should not just stop with calling this "nonsense". They should press for this guy to be sacked.

Save Vivekananda House, Chennai from DMK Govt. hostile takeover

Those famililar with the city of Chennai will know that Vivekananadar Illam (or V.House, in short) on the banks of Marina beach is one of the not-to-miss landmarks of the city.

It was in this heritage building (called Castle Kernan at that time and later Ice House) that Swami Vivekananda stayed during his historic visit to Chennai in Feb, 1897, after his victorious tours of the US and Europe. Swamiji delivered some of his finest and most inspiring speeches from this very building.

As a tribute to this great son of India, govt. leased this building in Feb 1997 (centenary of Swamiji's Chennai visit) to Ramakrishna Math, upon Math's request. RK Math put a beautiful permanant exhibition about Hindu culture and Swami Vivekananda's life, at the cost of one crore. Most visitors to the beach also come to V.House, enjoy and learn from the exhibition and also pay their respects to Swamiji's life-size statue installed there.

The lease was to expire in the next 2 yrs, The Math was planning to extend it for another 30 years. But now the DMK govt. has issued a sudden *3-day* notice to the Math to vacate the builiding immediately by Apr-24! The govt officials have also started pressurizing the Math.

Reason? Govt. wants to set up a "classical Tamil center" at this place, which govt. claims will promote academic study and research of classical Tamil works. The govt. has hinted it may even demolish the century-old building for this purpose.

Well, nobody would oppose such a center. But why is the govt *so* bent upon this particular heritage building for this purpose, that has Swamiji's footprints? The govt. can always set up a new building in any place in Chennai for this purpose !

It is very clear that the anti-Hindu DMK govt. wants to erase the famed memory of Swami Vivekananda from the Chennai's landscape. But by cunningly using the name of "Tamil", DMK thinks it can silence any opponents of such a move. But its not working, as many opposition parties, including ADMK and Sarathkumar's party have condemned the govt's move.

Please add your voice also to the campaign to save Vivekananda House in its current form. Sign the online petition -

Power Gurus and Hindutva : "The Week" story

Here is my letter to The Week, regarding their recent cover story "The Power Gurus" .

Dear Editor,

Whatever maybe the motives behind this cover story, please accept my compliments for such a wide coverage. Your story will serve to highligh the need for Hindu Gurus to be concerned not just about the Hindu religion and spirituality, but also the challenges, pains and aspirations of the Hindu society. Needs that cover politics as well as social reforms. This time around, such "alerts" will not make the Gurus and their followers to move away from the social mobilization, as many in the "secular" side would wish, but will hopefully serve as further impetus to get deeper and broader into it.

The interview with Mata Amritanandamayi is a gem. Thank you for publishing the full text version as well. To a leading question on the difference between Hinduism and Hindutva, her answer ".. selflessly serving one's nation and its people is Hindutva" conveys a divine blessing and reassurance for countless Hindutva activists across the world, including those inside and outside the Sangh Parivar.

The perspective of Koenraad Elst that Hindutva does find very many vibrant experssions and is not just confined to the grand old, elephantine organisation called RSS is very refreshing. RSS leadership should take his harsh criticism in the right sprit, as a doctor's prescription, as Elst, the author of "Decolonizing the Hindu mind" deeply knows the symptoms of the diseases that ail the self alienated Hindu society.

Thanks,
Jataayu

Maharishi attains Maha samadhi - A Tribute & some thoughts

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has attained Maha samadhi at the age of 91. He was a great soul and one of the greatest Yogis of this era, who brought Yoga, meditation and Hindu spirituality on the world stage. Particularly to the west, particularly at a time when the west was heading towards moral and spiritual degeneration. He was truly a pioneer to the many globe trotting Hindu spritual Masters and Gurus of today.

Born "Mahesh Prasad Varma" in the ywar 1911 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, he became a close disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the then Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, Badrinath, a Guru well respected all over North India at that time. Upon his Guru's passing away, Mahesh became his spirtual heir and started teaching what is now known as "Transcendental Meditation" (TM). Millions of aspritants and Sadhaks all over the world have benefitted from this practice.

Credited as the author of more than 16 books, including commentaries of the Bhagavad Gita and some portions of the Vedas, Maharishi expanded his work to include many aspects of Vedic teachings. He also established universities, townships and many organizations towards this end.

In an act that is truly a hallmark of great Yogis, On January 11, 2008, he announced his retirement from his normal activities: "Invincibility is irreversibly established in the world. My work is done. My designated duty to Guru Dev is fulfilled." He resolved to use all his remaining time to complete his commentary on the Veda. He passed away less than a month later.

Humble Pranams to the glorious memory of Maharishi.

Something that is very saddening is NOT Maharishi's passing away, he lived a very fulfilling life of 91 years, but the way the media (both the Indian and western) portrayal at this time - Ignoring all the great contributions, but harping on silly controversies that surrounded him.

The New York Times : Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Spiritual Leader, Dies
The Times of India: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, guru to the Beatles, dies
In line with TOI, *all* Indian newspapers have "Beatles Guru" in their headlines.

The only fitting tributes, are an aricle by Dr. Deepak Chopra and the IndiaTimes Pay your tributes page.

An insightful comment from a good friend of mine -

"... While the results of his techniques could be a subjective experience, as most such spiritual exercises always are, he was the first who showed the world glimpses of what Yoga could achieve if one had a serious bent towards it for which he had given a simple technique to start with. It would be entirely naïve to believe that one would become a Rishi by chanting a mantra for twenty minutes twice a day, but that seemed to have been the expectation of those who were disappointed by trying his techniques. I have personally seen and experienced the sharpening of certain human faculties as one learned some of what he called as advanced techniques. He proved with clinical results as well so many beneficiary factors of his techniques.

Yes, he seemed to have gone overboard on quite a fewoccasions, but then he had so much of positive contribution to the world of Indian Spirituality which make one feel sad that he would be remembered today as the Guru of Beatles, who hardly even acquired any level of mental maturity after being personally acquainted with him, other than create some of their best songs in that period ofassociation.

What makes me feel sadder is not the negligence of the Western Media or how they caricatured him. It is the negligence of our own people of whose spiritual legacy he was an exponent of. What a tragedy!"

Arundhati Roy's article on Genocide - some comments

My response to the article Listening To Grasshoppers by Arundhati Roy in Outlook Magazine, 4-Feb-08 issue.

That was a long and frustrating article by the erudite Arundhati Roy in a crisp and gripping language. But I wish the article also contained more truthfulness, honesty, neutrality, non-suppression of already known material and other such qualities as well.

It starts with her repeating the totally discredited theory of Nazi-ness of Hindutva based on 2-3 quotes from the obsolete and disowned “We, our nationhood defined” by Guru Golwalkar of the 1940s fame. These quotes were analyzed in-depth by Dr. Koenrad Elst in a detailed essay “Was Guru Golwalkar a Nazi?” in his book “The Saffron Swastika” and found echoing just the popular sentiments of the prevailing time and nothing more.. In fact the Communist praise at that time, for Hitler and Nazis would far outnumber these 3 quotes and will fill up a year worth of Outlook Issues! Will Ms. Arundhati call the CPI-M formed in the “mould of Nazis”, when there is a far stronger case for that??

Her listing of various RSS outfits among extension plans of its “evil ideology” will only evoke ridicule. The organizations like Vidya Bharati and Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram have been cited as glaring examples of selfless services even by the adversaries of RSS!

She goes all over the world to evoke heart rendering tales of genocide and destruction – from Ottoman Empire to 15th century butchering of Native Americans by the armies of Columbus to Africa to Australia. Very Good. Admirable.

But she miraculously forgets everything about the centuries of genocide that happened in her own country, her own backyard. The genocide of Hindus at the hands of Muslim aggressors and invaders. A genocide invoked by Will Durant in his “Story of Civilizations” in such strong words - “"...the Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown by barbarians invading from without and multiplying from within." A genocide, the very thought of which makes V.S.Naipaul call India as “wounded civilization”.

Let’s pardon the lady for her memory lapse about the medieval history. A good half of her article is devoted to the 2002 Gujarat riots (I seriously pity her struggling hard to fit the official UN “definition” of genocide to these grievous incidents), while she mentions the bigger, 1984 genocide of Sikhs by Congress goons in passing.. Great. But, what about the genocide and large scale displacement of Hindus of Kashmir valley that took place in between these 2 incidents? According to the official govt. figures there are about 5 lakh Hindus displaced from the Kashmir valley since 1990. An undisputed act of ethnic cleansing punctuated by the mass murders of Sangrampora, Jagatsingpura, Wandhama and Nandimarg (2003). The lady does not utter a single word about this. Her only usage of the word “Hindu” is to denote murderers and perpetrators of crimes.

Arundhati, is your heart so harsh, is your intellect so numb, and is your loyalty so dubious that you do not remember to mention even one event in history where Hindus are the victims?

Towards the end of the essay, you say, “Perhaps these many million Constraining Ghosts of the Past wonder what advice Gandhi would have given the Indians of the Americas, the slaves of Africa, the Tasmanians, the Herero, the Hottentots, the Armenians, the Jews of Germany, the Muslims of Gujarat…”

Don’t the Hindu victims of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kashmir, Fuji and other places even merit as one of the many items in such a customary list?

What have the Hindus done to you, Arundhati?

Hailing Indira killers as martyrs - Please, someone condemn SGPC

News item "Indira killers are martyrs, says SGPC" in TOI today. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Indira_killers_are_martyrs_says_SGPC/articleshow/2679313.cms
A highly condemnable, criminal and anti-national act by SGPC.

But it is evident that media is totally playing down on this news without giving adequate coverage. It appeared as a small news item in page 6 or 7 of Times of India today. BJP and the Hindutva groups are observing deathly silence. Congress is so numb to even dare a rebuttal - it probably does not want to antogonise Sikhs at this point, with Paaji Manmohan Singh at the helm.

Media deliberately and consciously avoids showing Sikh religious leadership in bad light even when it is involved in such an act.

Remember how media kept harping on the passing comment of another Vedanti, Mr. Ram Vilas Vedanti of Varanasi a few months ago? The one abt cutting Karunanidhi's toungue, as a punishment against TN CM's insult on Sri Rama. This was a simple intimidation by some lower rank individual in the VHP and the media trumpeted it as an example of "Hindu intolerance" for a long time, in spite of Vedanti retreating from it!

This act of SGPC, the highest body of Sikhs legmitises and sanctifies the killers of a former PM thru a religious ceremony, aimed at sowing the seeds of terrorism and separatism.

Super-appeasement of the Sikh fundamentalism by the media and all political parties, including the "anti-appeasement" BJP! This is a very, very dangerous precedent.

Please, someone condemn SGPC.

What Actually Happened in Orissa?

Here is an account of the Orissa incidents that I received from Sri. Ashok Sahu, IPS (Retd), Former Inspector General of Police. He is a valiant officer who fought insurgets in north east while at service and is an expert on Naxal groups, North east insurgency and Church-terrorist nexus.

Facts on 'Clashes among Christian Missionaries and the Tribals in Kandhamal District of Orissa'.

Reports of communal violence involving the converted Christians led by the Missionaries on one hand and the Tribals on the other, in Kandhamal District of Orissa by the media since 25 th December 2007 are vastly distorted and motivated which in public interest need beclarified much before the national image is tarnished before thegeneral public and the international community. The whole series of incidents started from unprovoked and preplanned attack on Vedanta Keshari Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati who was visiting his disciples in Darsingbadi village in Kandhmal District on 24 th December.

Swamiji, 82 years old has been working relentlessly in the District since 1967 to protect the local population where more than 75% are below thepoverty line and are not literate. He has opened schools and hostels, hospitals and temples to protect mainly the tribals and the down-trodden from the clutches of Missionaries who are operating with massive fund from foreign countries and pumped into NGOs in disguisedoperations to convert the local tribals into Christianity.

Chief of such NGOs is one 'WORLD VISION' patronized by one Mr. RadhakantaNayak, a local of Darsingbadi village from 'Pana' community but later got converted to Christianity. He happens to be an employee of the State Government promoted to the IAS and retired, and now a Member in the Rajya Sabha. His henchmen were the assailants who attacked Swamiji on 24 th December.

Meanwhile, the Kui tribals among the Kandhs in the District were agitating on the conspiracy by Mr. Nayak who is engineering forgetting a Presidential notification under the provisions of the Constitution, to get his 'Pana' community, who are scheduled castes relisted as scheduled tribe along with the Kui on the ground that the former also speak the Kui dialect. Various reservation facilities to which scheduled tribes are entitled are not available to persons converted to Christianity.

On hearing the assault news on Swamiji, the already agitated Kui community reacted and protested through out the district against the 'Pana' community converted to Christianity. Interestingly, the Maoist (Naxalites) activists in the district arealso mostly from among the recent converts to Christianity. Among 47 Maoists arrested in connection with recent burning of villages inhabited by Hindus ( Brahmanigaon, Jhinjiriguda, Katingia, and Godapur) as a counter to attacks by tribals on the Churches, 20 guns have been recovered by the security forces from them.

It is evidentthat the Maoists and the Church are hands in glove with each other to spread fratricidal killings and clashes among the tribals which is evident also from incidents in Karbi-Anglong and North Cachar Hills districts in Asaam. Conversions of poor tribal villagers are being conducted on gun point and by spreading terrorism.

While in active government service Mr. Radhakanta Nayak IAS (Retd.) and Mr. John Nayak IPS (Retd.) both converted Christians were instruments of the Church to proselytize the poor and illiterate'Pana' and tribal communities in Kandhamal district of Orissa. Under guise of NGOs thousands of dollars are pumped into the country for conversion of tribals in Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh,Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and the North-East.

Taking advantage of the poverty and lack of education, thousands have been converted who are also being trained for separatist movements like NSCN in Nagaland and Maoist insurgency in the aforesaid states. This trend is more pronounced since 1970 which is evident from the census reports till 2001. In Kandhamal District alone the Christian population hasincreased from 6% in 1970 to 27% in 2001, despite an Act enacted by Orissa Legislature in 1967 to prevent conversion by allurement, coercion, bribery and cheating.

Swamiji has been fighting a lone battle by making the tribal district his home for last 40 years, who has been targeted by the Church to finish him off. Earlier to the recent attack, there were two other lethal attacks on Swamiji in 1971 and 1995. Since then the government has provided armed protection to Swamiji. Inspite of that, he was attacked by armed assailants on 24 December 2007 in which he and his driver and armed security personnel were seriously injured and hospitalized in Cuttack Medical College Hospital.

Hence, the recent clashes manifest the various ramificationsof the socio-economic, political and cultural tribal issues and the deep-rooted conspiracy by the Church to destabilize our society and our economy . Let the Nation awake and protect our tribal brethren and the national media stop distorting the facts.

Ashok Sahu, IPS (Retd.),
Former Ispector General of Police.

Burk-E-Albani : Islamic Kamadhenu?

I stumbled upon this interesting piece of art while searching for original oleographs published by Raja Ravi Varma Press -

Is this the representation of the horse Harak, climbing which prophet mohammed is supposed to have visited different worlds? Or some other motif mentioned in Islamic books?

I am amazed at the ease with this artist from Southern India (not Ravi Varma, some other artist) has blended motifs and icons from different cultures and religions.

Arrogance, Thy name is Karunanidhi!

It is not new for the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to hate-speak and hurt religious Hindus. But his speech at the recent DMK convention in Erode is a new chapter in his continuing saga of hatred against the Hindu religion.

“We will explore alternative channels, preventing damages to the Ramar's Bridge” - this assurance by the Central government to the Supreme Court has chafed him greatly. He is more interested in getting the Ramar Bridge demolished than completing the Sethusamudram project. That’s what makes him angry at the very hint of exploring alternative channels. But, is there any use by this anger?

At the centre, the Congress is vote fearing, and so the nagging "repeal of support" has become worthless. That’s why the Centre so explicitly declared its reverence for Rama in the Supreme Court and also asked for three months of time to explore an alternate way. In the said function the Chief minister declared "they are gaming with us hoping that the people would accept these foolish, dumb, and idiotic religious sentiments by dragging Rama's name....to defeat the presently-affecting-us, darkening in future conspiracy I place before you this resolution” speaking thus, conveyed in the resolution "the central government fearing the communal groups.... must not yield to the attempts to stop Sethusamudram project".

What use such a call has? Haven’t the Congress and the central government already started resorting to the “foolish, dumb and idiotic religious sentiments”? Even the Central law minister has remarked, “Rama is a part and parcel of Indian culture. It is not the matter to be disputed. Existence of Rama cannot be doubted. As Himalaya is Himalaya, Ganges is Ganges, Rama is Rama! No need to prove this.”

The central government filed an affidavit “Ramayana is sacred; the government fully respects all religions, and, in this case, the Hindu religion”.

Therefore, the “conspiracy” that the CM warns about has got sanctioned by the central government. The Central government has come forward to “darken the future”. Despite these, why the CM has to support this central government? Why the DMK ministers still hold posts in the government that darkens the future? How can the DMK rule in Tamil Nadu with the support of Congress that ally with the “conspirators”? Is it not betraying ‘Periyar’?

Isn’t it absolutely necessary for the DMK to quit the central government, withdraw support to it, and even reject the support availed from the Congress in Tamil Nadu, to defeat this conspiracy? Why is the CM not determined to do this? What else can be the reason for this, other than the power-hunger?

By not opposing the central government, which voluntarily got eligible to be added in his list of people he described as "frauds, cunning jackals" - is he a supporter of frauds? Is he the patron of cunning jackals? The CM, who never hesitates for a moment to sacrifice Periyar’s ideology for the sake of power for himself and his family members, displays his courage with just rants. “Bravery only in words” indeed! The lust for power held by him and his family members blocks him to anger at the central government. Poor man, whom can he direct his anger at? There they are, the Hindu beliefs, always.

In his outrage, the CM has spewed venom using the Tamil singular phrases indicative of disrespect, “Who is this Raman? In which engineering college did he study to become an Engineer? When did he build that bridge? Is there any evidence?” Hatred filled, he has, in reality, blabbered, thinking that he is talking smart.
Common sense will infer that “Rama built the bridge” does not mean that Rama actually put stones one over the other and built it with his own hands. When we say, “An emperor built a temple” or “created sculptures”, does that mean he actually chiseled the stones with his hands? All it means is that on his command, or at his desire, craftsmen completed those works. But, those works are not known by the names of the sculptors involved, but are renowned only by the names of the kings.

Same applies to Rama’s Bridge. The CM only knows insulting Ramayana, but he never misses to make mistakes while quoting from the epic (I had pointed these on several earlier occasions too). It was the king of the oceans, Samudra Raja, who guided Rama in making the bridge. It is he who also suggested the name of the expert Nala. “Nala is the expert son of divine craftsman Vishwakarma; bestowed with divine powers and knowledge of the profession from his father; He came forward and requested Sugriva, ‘O great among Vanaras, let the materials be collected for the construction of the bridge’.

Vanaras spread out to collect the materials requested by Nala. (“Vanaras” do not mean what the English word “monkey” means; they are not monkeys. As per Valmiki Ramayana, they are great warriors; learned men; built palaces and lived in the city). “With the help of Vanaras, boulders are made, trees were uprooted and brought. Trees, boulders and other such material were all brought to the seashore. To keep the boulders upright during the construction of the bridge, strong ropes were used. As per Nala’s command, Vanaras worked swiftly, pushing the boulders into the ocean and placing the wood over them. The constructed bridge resembled that of the galaxy of stars on the celestial sky. From the sky the bridge looked like the parting that splits a lady’s longhair into two parts, on which the Vanaras and others climbed and crossed the ocean”.

These are the details found in Valmiki Ramayana. Wishing to make a smart talk, the blabbering chief minister, could at least have asked a little more sensible question, “In which Engineering college did Nala study?” If thus asked, our answer would be “Nala learnt it from his father and he was renowned as an expert in his field”.

Let that be aside. The CM, who asks, “in which Engineering college did Rama study to build the bridge?” would ask similar questions about some other identical beliefs?

“They say that the legendary lady Kannagi plucked out one of her breast and threw it to burn the city of Madurai. Will the CM ask, “In which college did she study that technique? Was it biology or a bomb making art?” We won’t question it, because we accept that Kannagi showed the power of chastity.

The CM wrote commentary for the ancient Tamil grammar treatise Tholkappiyam. Will he ask, “In which college did Tholkappiyar study grammar? Who taught grammar to the one considered as the very originator of Tamil grammar?”. We won’t question it, because we understand that there lived great sages in ancient times, endowed with wisdom and expertise that might not be comprehensible to our limited knowledge.

“It is said that Thiruvalluvar authored the Thirukkural. Where did he learn the methods of composing poetry? Where did he learn Tamil? Where did he learn the philosophical querying known as philosophy?” will the CM ask such questions? We won’t question, because we know that Thiruvalluvar is a divine blessed saint.

Ok. Leave these aside. Has the CM questioning the existence of Rama, ever made even a minor comment about the beliefs of other religions, even by a slip of tongue?

Has the CM spoken anything about the much revered hair of Prophet Mohammed that is claimed to be present in the Hazratbal Mosque of Kashmir? Will he ask, “How do you know it is the hair of Mohammed? What is the evidence?” We won’t question it, because we have learnt to respect the beliefs of other religions; and we believe that speaking insolently about sages revered by people of other religions is a crass and mean act.

“It is said that Jesus Christ died at the cross and then came alive. In which laboratory did he learn that art? Or the one who brought him alive, through which scientific research did he learn this medical procedure? Is there evidence?” Will the CM ask these questions? We won’t question this, because we know it is barbaric to abuse the messiahs and beliefs of other religions.

Why to go this extent? "The ochre Buddha wore was yellow in color, that is why I always wear this yellow shawl" is one of the reasons the CM gave for his yellow effectualness. “What is the evidence to prove that Buddha’s garments were yellow? Were did he dye his garment?” will the CM ask these questions? We wont ask these questions, because we feel that it is utter stupidity to make such dim-witted comments about Avatars, the human manifestations of the Divine.

The big evidence that the CM shows is the Nehru’s remark that Ramayana is a myth. Any opinions by atheists, Nehru included, on Ramayana or Hindu beliefs do not qualify to become pronounced judgments on the subject.

It appears that the CM considers Nehru’s words as sacred lore, err.. pardon.., ‘Periyar’ lore - what does he have to say about another opinion of Nehru? When Nehru rubbished DMK as “nonsense” in one word, why did the DMK cadre conduct a big struggle? When Nehru himself has pronounced the judgment, where is the case for appeal? Shouldn’t they just accept themselves as “nonsense”?

The CM talks erratically about the beliefs of Hindu religion only. Because his decisive opinion is that Hindus are all gullible idiots. If not so, will he dare to tirade so abusively about the Purushottama worshipped by crores of people?

Money induced pride, power induced madness, political-fame induced arrogance - when all these come together in a person, his mouth will speak like this. This speaker of Rama’s engineering qualification, on what qualifications, hold the office of the Chief Minister? By the votes of the people; the very same three fourths who worship Rama as the Divine manifestation.

“I don’t want these votes, I don’t want at all the votes of the fools who think Rama is Divine!”, Will the CM declare? Does it matter? We shall declare it. It will be an utterly shameful act if Hindus who worship Rama and other Divinities vote for him and the party that he associates with.

Rama Sethu : Sacred geography and sacrilegious central govt.

“No evidence to prove existence of Ram, Centre to SC”, today’s newspaper headlines blared.

In the midst of the ongoing agitations calling for preservation for Ram Sethu and the central and TN state governments bent upon going ahead with dredging in the Ram Sethu as part of Sethu Samudram Canal Project, Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has come out with such a pearl of wisdom. It has also asserted that Ram sethu is not man made and can not be considered a national monument.

The multi-crore rupee Sethusamudram project that proposes to provide a shorter sea route from Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka has been in controversy for quite some time. There were deep concerns regarding livelihood of a large number of fishermen communities, damage to marine ecology and aquatic life and also strategic interests as the sands of the coast are rich in Thorium deposits. Canada based Tsunami expert Tad S Murthy had also elaborated the possibility of presence of Ram Sethu having saved much of the Indian east and west coast from large scale ravage by Tsunami. Plus, there is opposition on the count of Ram Sethu being one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots and object of devotion to Hindus. As of now, all the other groups have almost become silent thanks to the powerful lobby of shipping companies and the influential project contractors with strong political connections who want to dub anyone opposing this project on any count as retrograde and anti-progressive! It is to be borne in mind that the Hindu groups are not against the project per se, but are only asking for considering alternate routes without damaging the sacred Sethu, at an incremental cost overhead.

At this juncture, such statements from the ASI and the central government have been made in ignorance and bad taste and above all, are unnecessary in the context of ongoing issue.

It is not of any significance to go into the question of whether Rama Sethu is man made, monkey made or nature made. Because Rama sethu is a part of “sacred geography” that defines most of the Hindu holy places and is an inseparable part of Indian culture. The very word “Tirtha” that denotes Hindu holy sites means water streams and rivers. All the Hindu holy places are invariably in riverbanks, mountains, seashores, forests and even in caves, like the famous Ma Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu. These places became Tirtha’s because of their holy association with the nature and were also made sacred by the footsteps of countless Rishis, Yogis and sages thru ages. The pilgrimages of Arjuna and Balarama narrated elaborately in the Mahabharata, do not mention temples, but only Tirthas. Magnificent temples were built later in these Tirtha’s to further add a touch of divinity to them. The sacred seven hills of Thirupathi, the confluence of three rivers in Prayag and three oceans at Kanyakumari are all inherently holy and not because of any “man made” structures. The natural flames that come out of earth at Jwalamukhi in Himachal Pradesh themselves are worshipped as the manifestation of Jwala Ma. What “man made” structure exists in the holiest mount Kailas, the abode of Shiva other than the cosmic glory of nature in all its grandeur?

Ram Sethu is also such a holy spot. The unbroken chain of beautiful formations is clearly visible in satellite photographs. Let them be anything - underwater coral reef or the deposits of sand and rocks that have accumulated there over long time, they are all part of this sacred geography. Many travelers have reported seeing the remnants of the rocks believed to be have been used in the construction of the Sethu still lying around on the shores Rameswaram, which really float on water, when thrown into the sea!

Go to any district of any states of India, you always find so many places that will have a holy association with Rama and Sita or say, Bhima, Arjuna or Draupadi. The big banyan tree (Akshaya Vata) at Gaya is supposed to have been a witness to Sita’s words. So is the polished stone at Panchvati, (Nasik) where Sita used to make turmeric paste. Hampi in Karnataka boasts of a cave where Rama and Lakshmana stayed at the outskirts of Kishkindha. All along the eastern coast of Tamilnadu, starting from Karaikal near Pondicherry and all the way up to Rameshwaram, you will find numerous big and small temples that adore the footsteps of Rama (“Ramar paada kovil”) who walked on the sands of this coast!

What does this tell us? The epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata have permeated so inseparably into the language, customs, arts, sculpture and the very soil of Bharat and the very cultural consciousness that unites India. Isn’t the natural rainbow called “Ram Dhanush” (Rama’s bow) in Bengali and “Indra Dhanush” (Indra’s bow) in a host of Indian languages? The legend and heritage of Rama Sethu built by the Vanara Sena of Shri Ram is of such nature. From an Indian cultural viewpoint, it is sheer ignorance, nay even sacrilegious to think of Sethu as a mere material or physical structure and to go looking for its historical roots.

The references to Sethu are found in the Valmiki Ramayana, Mahabharata and many other Puranas which revere it as a sacred spot. The Classical Sangam literature of Tamil (1st century CE) adores the Sethu and so do much of the later literary works. These firmly establish the fact that the “Sethu” is a sacred national monument. In fact, ASI’s close cousin, Survey of India has the words “aasetu himaachalam” (From Sethu to Himachal) in its official logo and seal!

Doesn’t this make a strong case to call for its protection and preservation? Sure it does. The questions about “man made” and “archeological” are not just unnecessary but may set a dangerous precedent for vested interests to exploit and destroy Hindu holy places.

Let us hypothetically assume that some commercial interests want to exploit the seven hills of Thirupathi (say, quarrying, destroying its forest habitat or do anything they like on the hills). Since this act does not touch the “man made” ancient monument of Sri Venkateswara temple, should this be allowed? If this comes up in court, will we have another similar performance from ASI, saying “No evidence for the presence of Balaji and Padmavathi on these hills, so it can be allowed”? Will the same logic be applied for Shabarimala, the abode of Lord Ayyappa or Vindhyachal in MP, the seat of Devi Vindhyavasini?

I think that Rama sethu issue should be looked from this viewpoint. Some Hindu activists starting their propaganda with historical evidences and NASA photographs is partly due to their own shallow understanding of these concepts and partly due to the inferiority complex that looks for western approvals of their own beliefs and traditions. Their overzealous attempts to only harp on “man made bridge” argument is proving to be not only counterproductive but also sets dubious and self-failing criteria for understanding and interpreting the extremely profound ideas of Hindu heritage and holy places. Their goal and mission is undoubtedly noble, but it needs a course correction to put the issue in the right perspective to counter the tirades of anti-Hindu secular media.

In essence, every Hindu should oppose the dredging of the Rama Sethu, because it is destroying a very important portion of our sacred geography itself, to which we have deep spiritual and emotional attachment. Besides, who knows what secrets these formations may reveal in future, to oceanographers, geologists, anthropologists and other researches? Should we simply destroy some object of reverence of centuries, out of short term commercial interests, because we don’t understand about it fully? Then we are denying the opportunity even to the future generations to explore it. Isn’t this destroying the future, akin to Taliban destroying the past by bulldozing the Bamiyan Buddha statues, because their hate-filled pea-brains could not comprehend them?

Aside, a comment about ASI and central govt misleading the nation about our epics.

The kingdoms, the heroes, the tribes and clans, wars, weapons, way of life, code of ethics – such mind boggling treasure of information about ancient India are present in the epics, which themselves have evolved over time, as living texts. The epics have much of human events and situations intermingled with supernatural elements. How can such a vast body of literature be totally based on imagination (like a mammoth science fiction written by an alien creature ?), without any influences from the society in which the authors were living – that is a common sense question, baffling the minds of researchers as well as commoners.

The truth is that eminent historians, academics and indologists who researched on the subject of historical connections of the epics Ramayana and the Mahabharata do NOT have any conclusive stand on the subject. There are way too many jigsaw puzzles to explore and solve. New discoveries facilitated by advanced technology and scientific knowledge, like the tracing of mythical river Sarsvati and the submerged city of Dwaraka only make this endeavor more interesting and exciting.

How arrogant are ASI and the central govt to brush aside all these realities and make such sweeping declarations regarding Ramayana, our national heritage! The affidavit filed by ASI speculates that the ram sethu was not built by any men or even monkeys as some artifacts like bones should have been found at the sethu if it is manmade. Are they serious? Have they gone utterly insane?

Or are they dancing to the tune of Italian-born Madame Maino who does not have any respect for the culture and traditions of this land? How dare is the central govt. to heap ridicule on Shri Rama and the Sethu like this? Does the congress party and its chamchas think Hindu traditions are laughing stock for them? Hindus, it is time we show them the door.
